- Ormond MacDougald, PhD, Professor of Internal Medicine and John A. Faulkner Collegiate Professor of Molecular & Integrative Physiology, University of Michigan, USA. Dr. MacDougald is an accomplished expert in the field of adipocyte biology, including marrow adipocytes, and adipocyte development, function and interaction with other cell types and organs.
- Sundeep Khosla, MD, Professor of Medicine and Physiology, Mayo Clinic, USA. Dr. Khosla’s research focuses on the mechanisms of age-related bone loss, sex steroid regulation of bone metabolism and the detrimental effects of diabetes mellitus on bone. Dr. Khosla's research group in his Osteoporosis and Bone Biology Laboratory is examining how fundamental aging mechanisms in bone lead to increased skeletal fragility and marrow adiposity.
- Clifford Rosen, MD, Professor, Director of Clinical and Translational Research and a Senior Scientist at Maine Medical Center's Research Institute, USA. Dr. Rosen’s laboratory is studying skeletal stem cell fate with particular reference to the switch between pre-adipocytes and pre-osteoblasts, the biochemical determinants of the switch and its alterations in osteoporosis.
- Olaia Naveiras, MD, PhD, Professor, École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, Switzerland. Dr. Naveiras, a hematologic oncologist, focuses her research on the role of marrow adipocytes in bone marrow failure syndromes including myelodysplasia and aplastic anemia.
- Moustapha Kassem, MD, PhD, Professor of Endocrinology and Director of Molecular Endocrinology Laboratory, University of Southern Denmark, Denmark. Dr. Kassem is an endocrinologist and researcher who contributed significantly to the field of mesenchymal stem cell biology, and the paracrine/endocrine role of marrow adipocyte regulating marrow niche supporting bone remodeling.
- Gustavo Duque, MD, PhD, Professor, Chair of Medicine and Director of the Australian Institute for Musculoskeletal Science at the University of Melbourne, Australia. Dr. Duque is a geriatrician and a clinical and biomedical researcher with special interest in the mechanisms and treatment of osteoporosis, sarcopenia and frailty in older persons, including targeting marrow adiposity.
- Janet Rubin, MD, Professor and Vice Chair for Research, University of North Carolina, USA. Dr. Rubin, an endocrinologist and clinical researcher, has long-standing interest in environmental regulation of bone mass and marrow adiposity in health, disease, and aging.
- Pouneh Fazeli, MD, MPH, Associate Professor of Medicine and Director of Neuroendocrinology Unit, Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism, University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, USA. Dr. Fazeli is an accomplished clinical investigator of the effects of undernutrition on bone loss and understanding the role and function of marrow adipose tissue, which is paradoxically increased in states of chronic undernutrition.
- Greet Kerckhofs, PhD, Professor of Materials and Civic Engineering, Université Catholique de Louvain, Belgium. Dr. Kerckhofs has developed new methodology for visualization and quantification of marrow adipose tissue.
- Izabela Podgorski, PhD, Associate Professor, Wayne State University, USA. Dr. Podgorski is studying the role of marrow environment, including marrow adiposity, in supporting prostate cancer metastasis to bone.
- Courtney Karner, PhD, Assistant Professor, Duke University, USA. Dr. Karner’s research contributes significantly to our understanding how cellular metabolism and fuel choice regulate skeletal stem cell differentiation toward osteoblasts and adipocytes.
